Gary will travel to Logan next Saturday to play Ceredo-Kenova in the state AA championship after defeating Welch 13-0 yesterday afternoon.
The game was no different than most of the typical Gary-Welch battles. A hard hitting, well fought ball game.
Dennis Webb scored both touchdowns for the Coaldiggers. One on a 2 yard plunge and the other on a 4 yard keeper.
He also was the key man in the offensive drives of Gary.
Welch was never able to mount an effective drive. Although they had several pass interceptions.
Curia intercepted the first Webb aerial, Yeager then intercepted one to bring his season total to 11. Jackson made the last steal.
Webb scored the first touchdown in the second quarter after Scruggs and Thornton blocked a Danny Smith punt on the three yard line. Perry's conversion kick was wide to give the Coaldiggers a 6-0 lead.
Welch had only one first down in the first half and totaled 19 yards in offense.
Webb's second touchdown came in the fourth quarter on Gary's first offensive play of the period.
The Coaldigger's now have 22 losses, 20 wins, and six ties in the series with Welch.

Once again the beloved barrel must return to its perch atop the Coaldigger gym.
After having it only one year Welch had to succumb to defeat.
Seniors who played their last game for the Maroon Wave were Ernie Vargo, Bill Budnick, Steve Yeager, John McClure, Jackie Frederick, Danny Smith, Jackie Green, Dickie Roberts, Frank Fowler, and Skipper Lassak.
Last year men for Gary were Dennis Webb, Dennis Myers, Johnson Clayton, Eustice Perry, Leon Allison, Robert Purcell, John Thornton, Leon Stout, Robert Gillespie, John Holpe, James Gregory, Andy Blasher, and Morris Scruggs.
After the game Sid Cure said, "Our defense was certainly our strongest part of the game tonight. This was one of our poorest offensive showings of the season. Holpe, Silns and Stout were outstanding on defense. We are very pleased with the win. Our 13 points were satisfying."
Outstanding defensive players for Welch were Roberts, Smith, Lassak and McClure.
Gary has finished their regular season but will have a shot at the state championship in the AA division. They meet Ceredo-Kenova next week in Logan for the playoff.
